Cherry and Martin is pleased to present a solo exhibition of work by Brian Bress.
Bress’s wall-mounted HD monitors show a soundless, digital loop in which isolated actors (often the artist himself) perform in various forms of dress—their faces, torsos, and arms obscured by sculptural masks and suits or paint. His characters face frontal and use the HD monitor’s screen as a picture plane on which they draw, stack painted blocks, and cut into with reciprocating saws. The masks and suits worn by the actors originate from the artist’s photocollages, which are composed of found and original photographs.
Recent and upcoming solo exhibitions include the Museum of Contemporary Art, Denver (Denver, CO, spring 2015); Los Angeles County Museum of Art (Los Angeles, CA, 2013); Museo d'arte contemporanea Roma (Rome, Italy, 2013); Santa Barbara Museum of Art (Santa Barbara, CA, 2012); and New Museum (New York, NY, 2012).
