Cherry and Martin is pleased to present a solo booth of six new video works by Brian Bress at the inaugural EXPO CHICAGO.
An ambitious follow up to his highly acclaimed January 2012 exhibition, "Underperforming," at Cherry and Martin, Brian Bress debuts six new video portraits at the fair. Three new drawing figures, a sea captain, a farmer and a hunter, join the series that already consists of a cowboy and a businessman. On a large-scale monitor, "Whitewalker," shows a beaded full figure walking toward the viewer. The most enigmatic of the group, the diptych "Gemini," is two columns spinning on turntables; the left side a delicate drawing of merging facial features and the right a colorful, abstract painting rotating in the place of the cutout face of a graphite drawing of a long-haired woman.
Bress received his MFA from the University of California, Los Angeles and BFA from Rhode Island School of Design. He currently has a solo exhibition, "Interventions," at the Santa Barbara Museum of Art, (Santa Barbara, CA). In the past two years, Bress has exhibited his work at such institutions as the New Museum, (NYC, NY); Museum of Contemporary Art (North Miami, FL); the Institute of Contemporary Art (Philadelphia, PA); Arthouse (Austin, TX); the Parrish Art Museum (South Hampton, NY); the University of South Florida Contemporary Art Museum (Tampa, FL) and the Utah Museum of Contemporary Art, (Salt Lake City, Utah). His video Under Cover (2007) was included in the landmark exhibition "California Video" (2008) at the Getty Museum, Los Angeles. His work has been reviewed in such publications as The New York Times, The Los Angeles Times, Artforum, Art in America, Art Review and Frieze.
