Cherry and Martin is pleased to present at Art Basel a solo statement by Erik Frydenborg. One of the most interesting young artists working in Los Angeles today, Frydenborg will exhibit four new sculptures and a wall piece. His Art Basel presentation engages both aspects of its titl e. Isolated by their individual plinths and frames, the works included in Sequestered Demosappear as strange demonstrations: engaging and mysterious.
In his March 2012 Flash Art review of Erik Frydenborg's exhibition at Cherry and Martin, Patrick Steffen wrote, "It is not necessary to decode the language of Frydenobrg; his instant search for an innovative communication successfully inhabits the mind of the audience." Frydenborg's sculptures and installations appear to rely on systems designed to convey information. In fact, they exploit the ambiguity and abstraction that result when such presentations are stripped. Frydenborg's works incorporate found objects, plastic casts, and hand-built structures. The addition of found and altered images adds an additional layer of narrative possibility. Writing about his own pieces, Frydenborg describes them as "apocryphal artifacts, composed from a broad range of collected objects and images, in an invented cultural archeology." They approach "the dedicated space of didactic communication as a mute organ—an open mouth emitting a silent tone."
Erik Frydenborg has exhibited his work widely in the United States. This is his first solo exhibition in Europe. Frydenborg received his BFA from the Maryland Institute College of Art and his MFA from the University of Southern California. His work has been reviewed in such publications as Artforum, Art Review and Flash Art. It was recently the subject of "Dr. Illegible" at Cherry and Martin, and "Erik Frydenborg," at the important Chicago curatorial space, The Suburban. Erik Fyrdenborg and T. Kelly Mason will be the subject of Cherry and Martin's two-artist Art Nova presentation at Art Basel Miami Beach in December.
